Situated 30 kilometres from Luang Prabang, Khouang Si Waterfall is a popular destination for nature lovers. The tour starts with an enjoyable boat ride along the scenic Mekong River, and a visit to a local nearby village. Then hop on a bicycle and cycle along a beautiful paved road to the waterfall, where lunch will be provided. Today, we enjoy a short-guided tour seeing the city’s oldest temple of Wat Sene and the magnificent Wat Xiengthong with its roofs sweeping low to the ground, which represents classical Laotian architecture. We then embark on a cruise upstream on the Mekong River, which also gives us a breathtaking view of the tranquil countryside as well as explore the mysterious Pak Ou Caves, two linked caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims.  Along the way, we stop at the village of Ban Xanghai, where they make the local rice wine. An optional early start gives you the fantastic opportunity to participate in the daily morning rituals of saffron-clad monks collecting offerings of Alms (ubiquitous sticky rice) from the faithful residents. This tradition is very unique in Laos, being the only Buddhist nation still preserving the procession. From there you will visit the morning Phosi Market, where you will see such diverse offerings as dried buffalo skin, local tea and saltpeter among the chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings. Laos is also known for its traditional crafts, and today you will visit local villages of Lao ethnic minority groups at Ban Ouay, Hmong Village, Ban Ou, Laoloum Village and Ban Thapene, Khmu Village, then drive to the beautiful Khouangsi Waterfall where you can cool off with a refreshing swim in the turquoise pools or walk along the forest trails. After returning to Luang Prabang by late afternoon, we continue to Ban Xangkhong, a village well known for its silk weavings and for its Saa (jute) Papermaking. After breakfast, we visit The National Museum (close Tuesday) at the former Royal Palace, which displays a lovely collection of the artifacts reflecting the richness of Lao culture dating from the days of the early kings right through to the last sovereign. Also the sapa market Central Market is not to be missed. After visiting these sights in the morning,  you have free time to explore the town and stroll around the shopping area. Full of things to see, from Buddha Park to the Morning market and an impossibly rich selection of international cuisine – most pointedly French – you’ll find yourself slowly won over by the easy charms of this evolving backwater. The city may reveal its beauty less readily than Luang Prabang, but spend a few days visiting its unusual sights, sampling its excellent food and enjoying a Beer Lao at sunset by the river, and you’ll soon feel at home here.

On the way to the famous and sacred structure of That Luang Stupa, you will have the opportunity to take pictures of the imposing Patuxay Monument, which is well known as Vientiane’s own Arc de Triumph. PM: The rest of the afternoon will be spent visiting the National Museum (close Tuesday), former Revolutionary Museum, which boasts a collection of antique items and the history of Laos’s fighters and leaders who were displaced from the ancient times through to the new revolution period. We then board a short flight to Luang Prabang, which is perhaps the best – preserved traditional city in Southeast Asia. UNESCO registered Luang Prabang as a World Cultural Heritage City in 1995. The tranquility and charm of this city, with its splendid natural scenery and cultural sights make it one of the most delightful places to visit in Asia. On arrival, we transfer you to your hotel. We then embark on a boat journey upstream along the Mekong River, which also gives us a beautiful view of the tranquil countryside as well as an interesting visit to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves, two linked caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. En route, we stop at the village of Ban Xanghai, where the local specialty of rice wine is produced. On our return, we stop at the local villages of Ban Xiengmene and Ban Chan then continue to see the royal temple at Wat Longkhoun, which once belonged to the royal family near the Sackarine Caves. Once back in Luang Prabang city we take a short drive to Ban Phanom, well known for its hand weaving.

AM: Impress Travel team will pick you up from your hotel after breakfast. Shangi-Lao, just outside of Luang Prabang is a little paradise. This resently opened camp provides you wilderness and luxery combined. Sourounded by the jungle and close to the Nam Khan River it is an one in a lifetime experience. This is a one day expedition from the Shangri Lao Explorer Camp around the Huay Sae valley, traveling by elephant, on foot with porter horses, and returning via our custom-built bamboo raft.

Transfer by VIP minibus to the “Shangri-Lao Explorer Camp” 15 km outside Luang Prabang.

After the arrival, you will get an introductory tour of the camp where your guide will teach you about elephants. You can talk with our veterinarian in the hospital, feed the elephants and relax by the riverside.

Your expedition begins with an elephant ride across the river and continues for 1.5 hours through teak forests, jungle and over hills to reach the protected Huay Sae Valley. Along the way you can stop to see the amazing scenery of the Nam Khan River Valley.

After reaching the Huay Sae Valley you leave the elephant and rest at the jungle Sala, enjoying a luxury lunch with traditional Lao food and wine by a secluded waterfall. Depending on the water level you can refresh and swim in the natural pools.
Continue with 1.5 hours trekking on foot along the marvelous Huay Sae mountain stream. The adventurous trail crosses bamboo bridges and passes waterfalls, fantastic limestone formations and turquoise blue pools in the dense jungle. Along our educational trail you will learn more about this important ecosystem.

Where the trail leaves the valley, traditional horses from the Hmong hill tribes are waiting for you to carry your bags up a more demanding up hill section. These strong, little porter-horses accompany you for the last 30 minutes of trekking through fields, plantations and Teak forest. Enjoy stunning views to the mountain ranges while your guide explains the local agriculture and farming methods.

Down at the Nam Khan River, a luxury bamboo raft is waiting to take you back. Have a coffee break, relax and watch the traditional village life of farmers and fishermen along the river. Slowly floating down the river, the relaxing 1.5 hour journey, plus an optional 30 min stop at the Tad Sae Waterfall, will bring you back to the camp

.4:30 – 5:00 pm leave the camp and return by VIP minibus to Luang Prabang where your guide will drop you off at your hotel.

NOTE: we are working with animals and in nature, time changes may occur at any time. (Bring shoes that can get wet!!) The waterfall though is dry during February-August! Elephant rides can take different routes through rivers and village in the dry season.
